BBC Panorama on the Hillsborough coverup

Contains harrowing footage

This is a full documentary if any of my followers wish to watch this, I’ll be doing so at lunch today

As others have said, an incredibly harrowing, but very important film to watch.  Not sure how long this will be up for, but if you’re out of the UK/can’t get it on BBC iPlayer, watch it here.

What's so wrong with English football anyway?

Interesting and thought provoking article from Supporters Direct (the organisation that heads up the UK’s supporters’ trust movement).

Anonymous asked: Aaaaah the new QPR home kit doesn't have enough hoops! It looks like Reading D: - a Glasgow QPFC supporter

Haha for me it’s gone back to how I remember QPR kits - fewer but thicker hoops, like this:  http://www.footballshirts.com/images/qpr-1983-retro-shirt.jpg   The caterham inspired kit is an embarassment, but the “dennis the menace” away shirt is back - could be a hell of a lot worse.  Anyway, Reading wear stripes, we wear hoops :)  All love to Queens Park, cheers!

Here’s a photo I took of Partizan Minsk ultras, who are a very left-wing based club from Minsk who did a tour of Germany during March. They played Tennis Borussia Berlin, Victoria Hamburg, FC Sankt Pauli, Roter Stern Leipzig & SV Babelsberg 03. This was taken when they played Babelsberg which is a team based in Potsdam who also have a very left-wing support base, coming from the large squat/punk scene in Babelsberg during the 90s.
I first learnt about Babelsberg from the excellent No Dice Magazine which had an interview with one of the ultra members from the oldest Babelsberg ultra group, Filmstadt Inferno 1999. No Dice is a magazine that covers football in Berlin at all levels. It’s a really great magazine, with some great photography and illustrations along with match reports and articles about local teams. I can’t recommend the magazine enough. It was an amazing experience watching the two sets of fans interact with each other, for a team like Partizan who face hostility in Belarus for their left-wing beliefs, being able to come to Germany and find solidarity with fans was fantastic. Watching Partizan ultras chanting ‘Antifa! Hooligans!’ then commence to have a snowball fight during half-time with the Babelsberg fans really reinstated my faith in football and football fans.

Brilliant submission right here - very much appreciated.  It speaks for itself really - and, as an aside, very glad to hear that apparently Partizan Minsk’s financial problems are not as bad as they once were.  A club with incredible fans standing up for their beliefs in an often hostile environment.  Cheers for that.

The Belles' Toll; On The FA's 'Relegation' of the Doncaster Belles

“Doncaster Belles won’t be in the top division next year. Not because of relegation, not because of liquidation, not even due to rebranding. They will not be in the top division next season simply because the FA has decided they will not be. In 2014 the FA have elected to further build upon the Women’s Super League with the introduction of a second tier FAWSL2. All current Super League teams have retained their seat at the top table for the new FAWSL1 except one, Doncaster Rovers Belles, who will be replaced by Manchester City.

The FA announced this decision via a news story on the FAWSL website on Friday 26th April. No fanfare, just a curt 120 word article which outlined the two divisional make-ups. There was no reasoning given (indeed a fortnight on there still has been none) just a token disclaimer “The FA will make no further comment until this process is complete.” Twenty two years of top-flight football ended via a press release that could have been written on a postcard.”

Brilliant article on the website of the Doncaster Rovers fanzine “The Popular Stand” on the appalling treatment of the Doncaster Belles by the FA.

Not explicitly football related, but something that always needs reiterating considering some of the bile being spouted on football messageboards.

soulvacancy asked: I enjoy your blog and was happy to see your commentary regarding Loïc Remy.

TW:  rape, sexual assault

Thanks very much for saying so, appreciate that.

I think Remy’s arrest and the response from fans could be an article in itself.  Indeed, a wider article looking at football supporters’ reactions to players being arrested (and in many cases, charged) for sexual assault would be relevant, particularly how team allegiance seems to play a massive role in it.  The split reactions from Sheffield United fans over Ched Evans comes to mind as does the reaction to Marlon King at different clubs.  Asides from a lot of fans essentially replicating the fucking depressing societal norm of victim blaming and in many cases wholesale rejecting the fundamental truth that sexual assault is never the fault of the victim, it’s crazy to see how those opinions shift depending on who supports who.

I know it’s not rocket science to suggest that fans give their own players a bit more slack and look at things through rose-tinted glasses.  But victim blaming, over-stressing the apologist “innocent until proven guilty” argument into the ground and so on is still, to me, far far more prevalent in cases of sexual assault - in comparison to the reaction of accusations of racism or non-sexually related violent behaviour.  When a player is accused of getting into a brawl, of being too hungover to train, of being abusive to fans - the instant reaction is bile, regardless.  But when a player faces an accusation of sexual assault, a lot of fans shift their perspectives to apparent wise old sages, extolling others to wait until “justice takes its course”, stressing that it’s an allegation or, at worse, claiming that the accuser is nothing more than an attention seeker.  It is utterly inconsistent and speaks volumes about where many, many people see the gravity of certain offences.  It seems, time after time, that sexual assault is seen as a low priority - and that’s wrong.

To put it in context, I remember there being rumours of a new violent incident involving Joey Barton on a night out - a club brawl of some sort (that proved to be false).  The majority of the QPR fan reaction on the message boards I go on were on the lines of him being a thug and that he shouldn’t be welcome at the club.  With the Remy arrest, the general tone I have seen is either to take the piss, to focus on his sell-on value or to “wait and see”.  Which I think says an awful lot about where many peoples’ moral compasses are set up.  Talking to a mate who supports the Blades, there’s a massive comparison to be drawn between the general reaction of their fans to Chris Morgan’s violent behaviour compared to the reactions to the conviction of Ched Evans for rape.  http://chedmandela.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/20120713-140506.jpg?w=575   <- That perhaps being one of the most depressing pictures i’ve ever seen.
